Oscars 2023 winners list: ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ takes Best Picture

Hollywood’s biggest stars descended upon Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre on Sunday to celebrate moviemaking magic at the 95th Academy Awards.
Jimmy Kimmel returned to host the Oscars for the third time and brought that special movie charm with a nod to Top Gun: Maverick. Kimmel took to the stage wearing a parachute after he appeared in a brief sketch that saw Tom Cruise eject Kimmel from the back seat of his jet.
In the end, the comedy-drama Everything Everywhere All at Once came out on top with seven Oscar wins and was honoured with the prestigious Best Picture award. Writer and director duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, alongside much of the film’s cast, swarmed the stage after winning Best Picture.
“One of the best things we can do for each other is shelter each other from the world we live in,” said Kwan.
The Daniels also won an Oscar for Directing.
Actor Ke Huy Quan has been lionized for his comeback performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once and went on to win Best Supporting Actor. Quan, who has not had mainstream success since his childhood role in Encino Man, was emotional as he accepted the award for his role in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
“Mom, I just won an Oscar!” Quan declared through tears as he held up his award. “This is the American dream.”
“Dreams are something you have to believe in. I almost gave up on mine. To all of you out there, please keep your dreams alive,” he said.
Everything Everywhere All at Once continued its win streak as Jamie Lee Curtis took home Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film. Curtis shed tears as she thanked the crew, her family and the “hundreds of thousands” of people who have watched her movies over the years.
Continuing the movie’s sweeping success, Michelle Yeoh of Everything Everywhere All at Once became the first ever Asian actor to win an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
“For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities,” said Yeoh. “This is proof to dream big, and dreams do come true.”
“And ladies, don’t let anyone tell you that you’re past your prime.”
Like Quan, Brendan Fraser has recently earned the title ‘comeback king’ for his career-reviving role in The Whale. Fraser, who starred alongside Quan in the 1992 film Encino Man, won Best Actor for his portrayal of Charlie, a morbidly obese English teacher who tries to mend a broken relationship with his teenage daughter.
Fraser was breathless and crying when he took the stage. He thanked Darren Aronofsky for throwing him a “creative lifeline.”
All of the nominees for Best Original Song performed on stage, including Lady Gaga and Rihanna. Lady Gaga appeared with a fresh face and wore a plain black tee to sing a stripped-down version of Top Gun: Maverick’s Hold My Hand. Rihanna performed Lift Me Up in a show stopping number dedicated to the late Chadwick Boseman.
There were a handful of Canadians up for an Oscar this year, including Sarah Polley, who was nominated for Best Screenplay for Women Talking and the animated movie Turning Red, which takes place in Toronto, Ont. Turning Red, however, lost to Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

Polley, of Toronto, Ont., won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and joked that she was grateful to the Academy for not being offended by the words “women” and “talking” together.
Throughout the night there were plenty of jokes about last year’s “slap heard around the world.” During the 2022 Oscars ceremony, comedian Chris Rock was slapped by Will Smith after he made a G.I. Jane joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from the skin condition alopecia. Smith shouted for Rock to “keep my wife’s name out of your f–-ing mouth!”
Smith was not in attendance at this year’s Oscars, as he has been banned for 10 years.
